That’s what Colin Ferrell’s character, a likeable child killer, tells Brendan Gleeson’s character, another likeable killer, as the two hitmen contemplate death in one of the funniest movies of 2008, “In Bruges.” After watching the scene, all football fans think to themselves, “THAT’S SO TRUE! Tottenham is stuck in purgatory!”
Since the Premier League’s inception, Spurs have finished between 8th and 12th place 11 times in 17 seasons and they’ve never finished higher than 5th and lower than 15th. They’re always a candidate to go to heaven — errr, I mean qualify for the Champions League — but they always fall short.

My favorite soccer league is less than four hours away from kicking off. Before it’s too late, I thought I would give my predictions on how I think the final table will look. In nine months, this will either be evidence of my soccer brilliance or it will give readers evidence that this site should be changed to “StupidSoccer.com.” I’m afraid the latter might be more likely.

The 2010 English Premier League: Where anything can happen.
Manchester United sold the best player in the league (if not the world) and can any replacement(s) reproduce Ronaldo’s production? Chelsea has world-class talent (and will probably get some more) but will Carlo Ancelotti be a repeat of the Felipe Scolari fiasco? Liverpool hasn’t won the title in 29 years and is there really any reason to believe year 30 will be any different? Arsenal finished a distant fourth in 2009, but with all of Arsene’s young stars getting a year older could the Gunners sneak to the top? And lastly, can Manchester City be a legitimate dark horse and prove money can win trophies?
How much fun is this going to be?

Manchester City is so much fun. They are reaching a level where they can do anything and it wouldn’t be surprising.
Since the Abu Dubai United Group bought City they have stole Robinho from Chelsea’s grasp, offered £100 million for Kaka when the rest of the econimic world was imploding, swiped away Newcastle’s best player when the Magpies desperately needed him and infuriated Villa fans by buying Gareth Barry. I didn’t even mention Nigel de Jong, Wayne Bridge and Craig Bellamy.
There’s little doubt more players are coming but — last time I checked — only 11 players can play at once, so some players will have to go. But who?

Admittedly, starting a blog when the European club season just concluded probably isn’t ideal. Then again, I do get to start with a clean slate and go from there. But before I start ramblings about the Confederations Cup, transfer rumors, coaching controversies, the Gold Cup, friendlies and MLS, let’s begin with the top five things to remember about the 2008/2009 European Champions League.
5. Liverpool vs. Standard Liege — The greatest “what if” of last year’s Champions League. If you forgot, in the ECL third qualifying round The Reds went 207 minutes without scoring until Dirk Kuyt scored in the final minutes of extra time to beat the Belgian side 1-0. What if Kuyt doesn’t score? What if Standard Liege win in penalties? How does that change Liverpool’s season?
